Church Women United in Cobb County Presents 1st Human Rights Award
(Pictured above) Church Women United in Cobb County met on October 4th at the Austell Presbyterian Church. Margaret Koehler, President, and Bettie Durrah, Vice President, of CWU in Georgia presented the first Human Rights Award honored by CWU in Cobb County, Georgia to Kathy Grosskurth of Cobb Faith Partnership (CFP). Kathy currently serves as Co-Leader of the CFP SW Cobb Geographic Team and Leader of their Nominating and Training Team. She helped form and served as the first president of the South West Cobb Faith Collaborative (SWCFC) and Cobb Assistance Partnership which later merged to create CFP. Also, Kathy served two terms as Vice President of the Cobb Unit of CWU and is an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Austell. President Mary Lou Fish welcomed 50 women to the first Saturday afternoon meeting. (Meetings are generally held on the first Friday morning.) Soloist Karen Cross, of Miracle Mothers, sang “Woman of God” and “He’ll Do It Again.” Angela Williams, of Voice Today, Inc. and SafePath Child Advocacy, spoke as an advocate for abused children. A child’s playpen was filled with teddy bears gathered to be donated to the Abused Women’s Shelter in Cobb County..
A highlight of the day was a humorous skit by Paula Turnbull, the quintessential proper English lady, as she instructed Jan Boehm, her American sister in law, the way to make a “proper” cup of tea and, how to dress for the occasion. The new slate of officers elected for 2008-2009, are: Pres. Mary Lou Fish, Vice-Pres. Darlene Duke, Recording Secretary Ann Guckert, Corresponding Secretary Kathy Grosskurth, and Treasurer Linda Coleman-Palmes. Following the business meeting and program, an elegant, delicious “Tea” was enjoyed by all.

Churches Reaching Across Denominational Lines

(Pictured Above) Mrs. Vickie Watson, Pastor Peter Kulakov, Missionary Linda Kay Coleman-Palmes and Mrs. Penny Pederson. We are all from "The Lakeview Adventist Church". The Macland Baptist Church Women's Ministry responded to an article that I wrote and was printed in the August/September issue of "The Powder Springs Messenger". They invited me Missionary Linda Kay Coleman-Palmes to do two presentations at their church. I am a member of "The Lakeview Adventist Church". I am also the Public Relations/Development Coordinator for "It's My Very Own" - Bags of Love Ministry. This ministry was started in 2006 here in Cobb County by Mrs. Penny Pederson who is the President of this group, and is also a member of "The Lakeview Adventist Church" which is under the leadership of Pastor Peter Kulakov. Our address is 4001 Macedonia Road here in Powder Springs.
Mrs. Juanita Hollar who is President of the Women's Ministry invited me to speak on Tuesday October the 7th at 11:00 AM for their day group. The presentation went very well. My husband Darrell Palmes, Mrs.Vickie Watson, Sewing Coordinator and her husband Matt Watson, along with Mrs. Judy Dopf who teaches Sewing Classes at the Lakeview Adventist Church; on Tuesdays from 12 Noon to 4 PM each week for women who would like to learn to sew; all attended.this presentation. We were greeted warmly and were told by Mrs. Juanita Hollar that they would sponsor this ministry for the entire month of October and they did. The three ladies were presented with beautiful gift bags at the end of the presentation by Mrs. Juanita Hollar. We were so surprised and grateful!
Mrs. Katie Oddom invited me back to speak on Monday October the 13th at 6:00 PM for the working ladies of that ministry. Vickie, Darrell and I returned that night. We had a wonderful supper with them and a nice fellowship. We received donations at each presentation, which included money, toys, books, stuffed animals, crayons, fabrics, hats, gloves and so much more. We had a trunk load of donations on our first visit and quite a few large bags on the second visit. I was indeed impressed with their kindness, generosity and willingness to help us, and these children. This is the kind of "Christian Spirit" that truly conveys "LOVE" for one another. We felt at home when we arrived there. They let me know that this was a worthwhile project and that they were happy to participate. Hats off to a job well done by one of the leading churches in our community! "It's My Very Own" - Bags of Love Ministry is a faith based non-profit organization here in Cobb County. This organization is committted to provide for the immediate needs of children being removed from their homes by local child protective services.
"It's My Very Own" seeks to make each child's life a little brighter by providing Bags of Love. Each handmade bag contains a handmade quilt, new toys, a special stuffed animal, and personal care items.
If you wold like to help us for the "Holiday Season" please contact Linda Kay Coleman-Palmes at lkc30127@comcast.net or phone her at: 770-694-5979 (H) If you would like additional information please go to our website www.imvo.org. We would appreciate any help that we can get, after all it's for these children!!!

C.A.M.P. Neighbors Helping Neighbors
For almost forty years Sweetwater Community Action Mission Program, commonly known as “C.A.M.P.”, has been helping families in crisis situations. With support from local churches, businesses, caring individuals and over 100 volunteers, they provide food, clothing and emergency financial assistance to low income residents of Clarkdale, Austell, Mableton and Powder Springs. On a recent visit, a community minded neighbor remarked, “I had no idea the number of families in our area that need help”. And it’s true. Right here in our own community there are parents that don’t know where the next meal for their child will come from. Families, who were able to make ends meet, are now faced with the question of whether to pay bills or buy food. This uncertainty in a home often leads to bad decision making, emotional turmoil and in some cases crime. The number of families receiving food assistance from C.A.M.P. has risen 40% this year due to the economic situation, and unfortunately this is at a time when donations have declined. Now is the time when your neighbors need your help the most. For more information about how you can help, visit online at www.svcamp.org or call Darlene Duke at 770-819-0662, extension 11. Find out what “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” is all about.

"Tapp Middle School Powder Springs FCA has started the '08-'09 school year on the right foot. We began our meetings the first week of school. In our fourth week, God's Warriors came and brought a great message from God and showed their physical strength as well. There were over 100 students and many adults in attendance. There were over 30 students that made decisions for Christ. Tapp Middle School was the first school where God's Warriors shared their FCA ministry twelve years ago. The FCA ministry has been doing tremendous work in several Cobb County schools already this year. Tapp's FCA meets every Friday prior to school at 8:15am in the theater. Students, staff and parents are encouraged to attend. If you would like further information about this great program at Tapp, feel free to email metrorefrig@aol.com"
